A career lasts for a while; a legacy lasts a lifetime. After 17 years, arguably the best LineBacker of all-time will hang it up. Ray Lewis, the heart and soul of the Ravens defense since 1996 will call it quits after a career that will be remembered as one of the best careers ever.
I write this piece not just as a Ravens fan, but as a spectator. You could ask a soccer fan to watch football, and he might get bored. But if you showed him Ray Lewis, he may just find his new favorite sport.
Ray was more than a LB to the game of football. As Ray Rice says "Baltimore IS Ray Lewis". It's very true. Living in Baltimore for my entire life, I know that there wouldn't be Baltimore football if it weren't for #52. Ray brought a whole new meaning to the LB spot, and the game of football itself.
His 17 years were capped by 12 pro-bowls, 2 career DPOY's, and of course, a 2000 Super Bowl ring in which he was named MVP. Ray touched the lives of many people not just on the field, but off as well.
As a fan of the Ravens, I would like to say THANK YOU, #52. Thank you for giving us what you wanted: A legacy.
I speak for everyone when I say, We love you RAY. <3
He added an element to the game that'll be missed by all NFL fans. His intensity in interviews was even unmatched. He was the best "mic'd up" player in the league. I doubt there will ever be another in his mold - but I hope his legacy will at least spawn in future players, his love and respect for the game.
ReplyDeleteGreat job Joe and well put! Ray Lewis has been my favorite player to watch and listen to for 10 years in the NFL. I love his soundbytes. I've had numerous people come on my show and say that they put Ray Lewis highlight tapes on to start their day. Both on the field playing and his pre game and in game speeches. I hate that he won't be playing anymore. BTW great timing by Ray with the Colts drawing inspiration from coach Pagano, Ray Ray gave his own team some as well. Love this guy!
ReplyDeleteI am going to miss Ray Lewis like I will miss Peyton Manning and Tom Brady when they retire. These are just special players that we love watching on the field. And Lewis, in particular made tough defense fun to watch. No doubt about it.
ReplyDeleteTo me, he and Lawrence Taylor are the greatest linebackers of all time. And there are others. And I know that players like London Fletcher and Patrick Willis will likely be future Hall of Famers. But they are followed one blueprint:
Ray.
