It's not out of the realm of possibility that New York deals Revis to another city if the compensation meets the Jets standards. Champ Bailey was the best cornerback in the game a few years ago when the Redskins traded him to the Broncos for Clinton Portis. Joe Montana was traded, so was Shaquille O'Neal and Alex Rodriguez. All these guys were still near or at the top of their game when they were traded. The point is that trading Revis is not crazy at all if you can get a good deal. Everyone is expendable.
Well what would be a good deal for the Jets if they were to fly off Revis Island? They do need a quarterback despite rumors of Mark Sanchez possibly getting some competition from former #1 overall pick JaMarcus Russell. Yea really! They certainly need help on the offensive line and they desperately need a pass rusher. They could use a couple linebackers to help out David Harris and would also benefit from multiple draft picks or perhaps a first rounder for the rights to Revis Island.
In my opinion I'd go back to the Champ Bailey for Clinton Portis deal. If you're going to trade an all pro player then you better get one back. I don't see the point of the Jets trying to trade for Matt Flynn or Kirk Cousins because there still isn't any talent to throw the ball to nor a viable running back to take the load off the QB. Going after a pass rusher may give them nightmares of Mario Williams contract, which by the way is the type of money Revis is looking for. Somewhere around $15 million per year. If the Jets are to trade Darrelle Revis, then they should be looking for guys like Roddy White or Julio Jones. Even taking a look at MJD or LeSean McCoy could be possibilities.
These are the types of players the Jets need to be looking for when exploring their options with Revis. You need to bring in play makers right now! A proven player who can impact your offense immediately. Getting back draft picks of unknown players is not the compensation the Jets should want for a player of Revis stature. One big factor in the way right now is Revis recovery from knee surgery. His health may be the stop gap to getting any deal done worthy for the talent of Darrelle Revis. If I were the Jets GM, and I may as well be at this point, I would be talking to the Falcons who need help at corner, the Giants who also have secondary issues with receivers to trade or maybe the Texans would entertain sending Arian Foster over to the Jets for Revis. If I'm the Jets I'm not settling. If I can't trade Revis for reasonable compensation then I'd ride out next season with him and take my chances in the off season. Revis has given the Jets headaches in the past over contract disputes and there's no reason to believe he would change his ways the next time around. Trade Him!!!

If the Jets want to rebuild that defense, they should trade Revis. But I think since Rex Ryan is still the head coach, you have to keep Revis. Clearly, the best corner in the league is in Chicago, whichever one of them you like.
ReplyDeleteI think if the Jets trade Revis, they either need to get a high draft pick or get an elite wide receiver or running back. New York is either going after Alex Smith or keeping Sanchez as their quarterback. Disappointing QB free agency class this season.
Have to either go to the Eagles (maybe you could get Mike Vick in a deal as well), the Rams, the Packers, or the Texans like you mentioned.
I just don't know if the Jets are humble enough to know that they are entering rebuilding mode.
I'd like to be a GM one day. Unfortunately, all I can do is analyze teams on a blog or just play Madden!
Haha I'd love to be a GM too man. That would be fun to play with someone elses money and gamble it on your assessments of certain players. Dream job.
DeleteI don't think draft picks, even a first rounder is good enough for Revis because it's still an unknown player. I'd also hold off on QB for now as well. They need to find playmakers. If Sanchez is to be the starter, I'd like to see what he can do with Santonio Holmes on one side and another stud on the other.
I agree. They need some offensive playmakers. Leave the D alone. Rex Ryan can take care of that. You're right on that. The Jets need to clear lots of cap space to get a free agency class filled with Pro Bowl receivers. But, Revis is underpaid. He's making $4 million a year!!! He needs a new contract.
DeleteNew York may have to rebuild on both sides of the ball, especially offensively. I think defensively they can make a couple of trading deals, especially if they want to deal Sanchez. But they have to get rid of players like Calvin Pace, David Harris, and Bart Scott, who are decent veterans, but New York has to move on. They are clogging up around $15 million.
I honestly think the jets should trade him, but I'm not sure there are any teams that will trade multiple picks, or a healthy proven superstar. There is no doubt about his skills, as I personally think he is not just the best corner in the league, but the best defender in the league when healthy. He also has a no franchise tag clause in his contract that would scare me as a general manager. I'm not saying revis isn't worth what the jets are asking, I just can't think of anyone that would/should take that chance. Getting a corner of revis' caliber is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and I would love my colts to make that move all day, revis opposite of Vontae Davis would be a great combo, and the colts definitely have the cap space to rework his contract. As a matter of fact, this could be new GM Ryan grigson's biggest land ever. You still have 2 years before you have to really start paying luck, and with 41 million in freed up cap space, not paying Dwight freeney an astronomical 19 million a year, the colts should jump at this chance. We definitely can build an offensive line through the draft, get a safety or 2, and lock in on revi island. The colts haven't been this exciting in a long time. Yeah, see, I can take anything and twist it into what the colts should do. I know everyone will be sick of the colts (again) sooner than later. We got to go from Manning to luck in the matter of one bad year, and from winning 10-12-14 games a year, right back to it. Say what you want about crazy Irsay, he is proving to be a genius.... So yeah, after all of that, I'm saying revis will wind up in Indy, and it will be dynasty time!!
ReplyDeleteThat all sounds good Scott but what are you trading? It would have to be draft picks and it seems the Colts will have late rounders for a while as they'll be in the playoffs frequently. The Colts don't have anything the Jets want right now unless they're in fact interested in draft picks, which I personally disagree with.
DeleteThen again one important factor we can't overlook is that Revis is a free agent after this season. Therefore the Jets may just say to themselves that they should take the best deal they can get because it's better than a 3rd round compensatory pick after losing Revis next season. If the Jets have no intentions of paying him big $$$ on a new conract then they'll have to try and trade him. More bad news for the Jets.
They'll have to either sign and trade him, or just let him go. Unless they have a deal set in place, they cannot sign him. It looks like the Jets are just unlucky.
