Balance is a necessary element of sports on and off the field. Basketball players utilize it to pull of
jaw dropping moves. Front office employees need it to create the right team chemistry. Commissioners
must enforce it to keep an equal playing field. Due to the emerging trend of super teams the once
peaceful equal playing field, is now threatened.
Throughout NBA history star players have aligned in hopes of winning a championship. The
relocation of teams into smaller T.V markets has made the league more vulnerable to star players
teaming up. Front offices are starting to catch up to the trend demanding key pieces in a trade, instead
of letting players walk for free. The infamous “The Decision" T.V special fueled the fire that combusted
the NBA.
A trio of emerging superstars led the deep 2003 NBA draft. A bright promising future appeared to
exist in pro basketball. Year’s later Dwayne Wade was the only player who was content with staying
put. Carmelo Anthony became the first example of front offices, demanding a blockbuster trade in
return for their star player. Will Kevin Durant put a halt to the dangerous trend?
David Stern must come up with a system to create a more equal playing field. Front office
employees need to do a better job building around their star players. The infamous super team trend
needs to be squashed. Star players need to be more patient with their situations. Balance is the only
way to save the NBA.

Like this piece, but I don't think they can level the playing field. I mean, you can only make rules in terms of limiting big contracts or what the salary cap is, but you really cannot decide where a player must go or limit his options. That is his right.
ReplyDeleteDo you think David Stern wants to limit big All-Star loaded teams like the Lakers and Heat? No. It rises up the league's popularity.
It is just too bad that basketball isn't about playing the game anymore, and it is just about money. Remember the days or Dr. J, Magic, Bird, and Jordan? They would never leave their teams to team up with other rivals anywhere else. They played for the competition.
