I think every NBA fan and analyst is smoking the wacky tabacky! The short term memory loss is at an all time "high" right now. The cloud of smoke clogging our minds and blocking our vision, otherwise known as Dwight Howard's injury, has made us forget that he's a super star that we call Superman. The guy is a dominant defensive force and 3 time defensive player of the year. He's been All NBA First team 5 times, led a cruddy Orlando Magic roster to the Finals and may be the best shot blocker since Dikembe Mutombo.
So why would you want to trade a guy like that? It doesn't make sense. Therefore I agree with Mitch Kupchak and I would make Dwight Howard the future of the Los Angeles Lakers. The only way I trade Howard is for greater or equal value or if in fact doctors tell me his injury will prevent him from being the type of player he has been the last 5 years.
We need to stop living in the immediate moment and take time to reflect and project what the next few years will be like. Yes, top level players will be available in a couple years and the NBA is full of stars that could make the Lakers great after Kobe retires. But most of those stars aren't centers. Howard's value goes way up automatically given the lack of quality big men in the game.
Howard has proven he can be the main piece on a championship caliber team and has plenty of great years left to compete for multiple championships. Here's the only caveat to the whole deal...does Dwight want to stay in L.A.?
Absolutely not. Dwight Howard wants his own team, but doesn't want the burden of carrying it. The Lakers are KOBE BEAN BRYANT's team. No doubt about it. Howard is owed $19 million this year and has failed to meet expectations. It is insulting that Howard, instead of Tim Duncan started the All-Star game.
ReplyDeleteI love Howard, but this system doesn't fit him. He can't run the floor, and his value comes on defense with rebounding. The Lakers do not need Dwight to score all the time, but Dwight wants to.
If Howard goes to a team like Atlanta alone, that's his team. But he really wants to play with Chris Paul.
The Lakers are Kobe's team for another 2 or 3 years tops. What about after that? I also don't believe D'Antoni will be around for long so the new coach will run the offense thru Howard. If you focus attention on the center it opens up the floor for the other 4 players. When the offense runs thru the guard it's harder to get guys open and shooters the ball at their spot.
